Fire Risk Assessment – Your Responsibilities

What Is A Fire Risk Assessment?

A fire risk assessment is an evaluation of a building or premises to identify and assess potential fire hazards and the level of risk they present. It is a crucial process aimed at ensuring the safety of people and property by preventing or reducing the likelihood of fire incidents.

In the process, an assessor will evaluate various factors such as the layout of the building, electrical systems, storage of flammable substances, fire safety equipment, escape routes, and the behaviour of occupants. The assessment aims to identify potential ignition sources, sources of fuel, and ways in which fires could spread.

Each assessment is tailored to the property and its occupants making every report unique.

Once the risks are identified, the assessor will determine necessary measures to mitigate or control these risks. This may include implementing appropriate fire safety measures like installing fire alarms and extinguishers, providing clear signage, ensuring the regular inspection and maintenance of fire safety equipment, improving the building’s structural fire resistance, and establishing effective evacuation plans and procedures.

The fire risk assessment must be reviewed annually or when significant changes to the building or its use occur. This is to ensure that the assessment remains up-to-date and effective in managing fire risks. Additionally, the findings and recommendations of the assessment should be documented and communicated to relevant personnel to raise awareness and ensure the necessary fire safety practices are followed.
